COLUMBUS, Ohio – An international leader in neurological sciences has been appointed chairman of the department of neurology at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

The appointment of Dr. Michael Racke (43221) by Dr. Fred Sanfilippo, senior vice president for health sciences, dean of the College of Medicine and CEO of OSU Medical Center, was approved today (3/3) by The Ohio State University Board of Trustees.

Racke comes to Ohio State from the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas. He is a distinguished scholar known for his research in immunology and multiple sclerosis.

“We are fortunate to bring Dr. Racke’s internationally significant research to Ohio State,” said Sanfilippo. “We feel he will provide a new element of synergy as he works with other leaders to enhance the Medical Center’s national neurological reputation.”

Racke has published extensively in leading journals and serves on the executive committee of the Multiple Sclerosis Cooperative Research Group. He also served on the scientific advisory committee of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

He has received the prestigious Harry Weaver Neuroscience Scholarship from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Young Investigator in Multiple Sclerosis Award from the American Academy of Neurology Education and Research Foundation.

Racke earned his medical degree at New Jersey Medical School. He completed his residencies at Emory University.

During the search for a chairman, Dr. John Kissel led the department as interim chair.

“The department maintained its leadership position in part due to Dr. Kissel’s dedication and the great work of the faculty,” said Sanfilippo.

The Medical Center’s Department of Neurology specializes in epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, neuro-oncology, and memory and sleep disorders. The department is ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report and is the only ranked neurological department in central Ohio.
